Must Have Baby Gear

Here’s a Remedy That Has Helped My Baby With Teething

God bless the inventor of Hyland’s Teething Tablets.  I love Hyland’s Teething Tablets.  I have tried every teether out there.  I’ve tried Orajel (the q-tip version, the regular version, etc.), and that does not last but more than a few minutes.  I’ve tried those mesh things with frozen fruit in them, but those things are a pain in the a** to clean, and I’m not really a fan of them.

Hyland’s Teething Tablets

I bought these at Walgreens after stumbling through the baby section as I always do, and I figured I would experiment with some more random baby products.  It turns out this was no waste of money at all.

I was nervous to use these teething tablet things for the first time, but they are so small and promised to dissolve quickly so I wasn’t nervous about choking.  My one-year-old is getting her molars in and she has not been a happy camper.  Poor little girly grabs the inside of the back of her mouth all day long.

Hyland’s Teething Tablets

I gave her three tablets of Hyland’s Teething Tablets and she experienced immediate gratification (as did my baby).  I thought I had gone deaf because suddenly my child was not longer inconsolably crying.  She went from a fussy, crying, uncomfortable baby, to a neutral, just somewhat needy baby.  There is a big difference between crying and just being needy.

I am adding these things to my “Must Haves” list.   I love them.

Baby Monthly Milestone and Age Board Photos – Great Baby Gift Idea –

Watch Your Baby Grow Each Month
with Baby Milestone Trackers
Tessa is 2-Months Old Today

We wanted to see how much our baby would grow from month to month, so we bought these adorable, “Baby is _Months Old Today,” signs from an artist off of when my daughter was born.  You can also get Baby Monthly Stickers from if you don’t like the board idea.  These monthly age baby boards  are preciously priceless, especially when you reflect back at the quick changes your little one made over that first year.

Iron-On Monthly Stickers

Great Baby Gift

These signs also make an excellent baby shower gift (especially if the parents know the gender and have already decided on the baby’s name)!  There are a few different artists who make these signs on  Honestly, if you spent an afternoon at Hobby Lobby, you could easily make your own.

We didn’t get the sign as a gift – we bought it ourselves off of Etsy (for about $25) after my sister suggested a similar concept to us – one where the baby wears a onesie that states their age in months, but you have to iron on the monthly image (or else gamble that the onesie that an artist provides will fit your baby).   I didn’t want to deal with that, and I certainly didn’t feel like (or have the mental energy) for ironing on anything on a monthly basis (I would prefer to use that time for a bubble bath and a glass of wine).  We were very happy when we stumbled upon these signs on Etsy because they are simple and easy to use – as the the monthly number is a just a velcro piece that is easily removed.

Tessa is 5-Months Old Today

Sentimental Value:

I highly recommend doing something like this for your newborn.  I had no idea how much my little girl had changed over the past year until I compared her monthly photos. Pulls my heartstrings.  It’s a great addition to the baby book.

Tessa is 9-Months Old Today

Tip: My friend does this exact same thing for her son, except she makes sure that he sits in the same chair (their glider in his bedroom) for each photo.  I think that’s a cute idea because you can see how his size changes relative to a fixed object each month!  I attempted to do this and made my designated place her crib while she lay in her newborn lounger, but she got a lot more wiggly as the months went on, and this became less and less practical.

How the Newborn Podster Can Help Orphans in Vietnam

HIV Orphanage Clinic – Hanoi, Vietnam
How the Podster Can Help the Orphans

I recently returned home to the United States from Vietnam, where we visited an HIV Orphanage Clinic and witnessed the heart-wrenching conditions that the children and the orphans there live on daily basis.  I returned home with a profound sense of gratitude, and guilt, for the life that I am fortunate, and lucky enough, to live.

Giving Coloring Books to
HIV Orphanage – Vietnam

My trip to Vietnam was a requirement of my Master’s program at the University of Wisconsin, where I am obtaining my Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and will graduate in February of 2013; our class visited Vietnam as part of our residency trip that is required in order to graduate.  The orphanage that we visited was an HIV Orphanage Clinic located in Hanoi, Vietnam.  I’ve thought about the children and the babies that I met every day since I left Asia.

Life Isn’t Fair.

I witnessed, first-hand, the operations of an HIV Orphanage Clinic in a third-world country, and it ripped my heart out.  Life isn’t fair.  I can’t go into the details about the conditions of the clinic, but what I can say is that I was blubbery sobbing mess underneath my sunglasses during the entire bus-ride back to the hotel after we left the HIV Orphanage Clinic. There is so much that I want to do to help these children (and the kind, patient caregivers at the clinic).

Letter to Leachco – Asking for Help

I have written a letter to the CEO and Vice President of Leachco, the manufacturer of my absolute #1 favorite baby product – the product is called the “Newborn Podster” (see my post about my Newborn Podster at How Do People Have Babies Without These Podster Things? for more details about the awesomeness of this product).

My letter asks for Leachco’s help and asks if they would be willing to donate their product to the orphanage in Vietnam. The letter is attached to this post.  Please keep your fingers crossed for a donation!

Below is a copy of the letter than I have sent to Leachco. on behalf of the orphans with HIV that we met in Vietnam.

Clyde E. Leach – CEO and Founder of Leachco, Inc.
Jamie S. Leach – Executive Vice President, Co-founder of Leachco, Inc.
Leachco. Inc., Corporate Headquarters

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Jamie and Clyde Leach,

I first want to begin by telling you how much I love your company’s Newborn Podster Infant Seat Lounger. I purchased this item when my daughter was 3-weeks-old, and I wish I would have had it from the day she was born because it made my life, and taking care of my daughter, substantially easier.  I cannot begin to tell you how much back pain, and time, this product has saved me.  I carried your Podster with me nearly everywhere my daughter and I visited; I packed it in my suitcase when we visited the grandparents in Idaho.  Your Podster is, by far, the most practical, convenient baby gear item that I have yet to purchase. I don’t know what I what have done without it as a new mom!
HIV Orphanage Clinic – Hanoi, Vietnam

I have purchased a total of eight different Podsters from you through since December of 2011.  Your Podster has become my “Go-To” baby gift – it is the first gift that I buy for all of my pregnant friends.  My friends inevitably end up feeling the same passion about your Podster as I do, and have told me that the Podster has now become their new “Go-To” baby gift item too!

I am a huge advocate of your product and even steer people away from the competing pillow that Boppy offers because I know that it doesn’t offer the same quality as your Podster.  Again, I love your pillow!
I saw how your Podster could significantly help these HIV orphans and their caregivers.

In September 2012, I traveled to Vietnam for my International Residency visit for my MBA program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  Our class visited many organizations in Vietnam, and among those was an HIV Orphanage Clinic located in the city of Hanoi.  Although the clinic functions by receiving funding from the Vietnamese government, the funding does not appear to be enough, and this funding does not permit the clinic to extend at all beyond a narrow definition of “necessities” for the children.  There were no toys in sight and diapers were a precious commodity.
HIV Orphanage Clinic – Hanoi, Vietnam

Our class of thirty people brought along toys for the older children.  It was a heart-wrenching feeling to see that these children didn’t have any toys.  Our class also donated two beds to be used by children (ages 3-10).  Our class also provided the supplies and labor to paint and repair the outside playground of the clinic.  Although I am proud of our work, I know it wasn’t enough, especially for the infants, who I have thought about every day since.

There are approximately fifteen infants, ages 0-12 months, at the clinic.  The only seating options that these infants have are the dirty floor, and metal beds that have a thin layer of bamboo as the mattress.   The caregivers lack any seating to place the infants that provides comfortable support.

All I could think about was how much this clinic would benefit from a LeachCo. Podster.

Infant Bedding – HIV Orphanage Clinic, Hanoi, Vietnam
With the help of my family, I plan to purchase 3 of your newborn Podsters
to send to the orphanage.

Would your organization be willing to donate any number of Podsters to this clinic?  Are there any other amazing products (such as your portable bath tubs) that your organization would be willing to donate?  Please?  I’ve included the mailing address and contact information for the clinic at the bottom of this letter.  I will be happy to pay for any international shipping for any items that you are willing to donate.

I will love your product either way. I know that the Podster could change the daily lives of the infants by providing them a comfortable, cozy seating space; and if my experience and my friends’ experience is any indicator, your product will help these caregivers tremendously.  The Podster is significantly better than any swing, bouncer or cradle I have tried or researched.  The time and comfort your Podster will provide to this clinic will be invaluable.

Thank you, in advance, for your time and consideration.  I will make myself available anytime, immediately upon your request.*

Sophie, the Giraffe Teether, Is Taking Over the World!

Sophie, the Giraffe Teether, is taking over the world.

It seems that everywhere I look these days, I see Sophie, the Squeaky Toy Giraffe.  If you look, you will too – this little giraffe is all over the baby-photos posted by your Facebook friends…and in the arms of passing babies and toddlers as you walk through Target and the grocery store.

There is such a likability factor to this squeaky giraffe toy.  Why?

Vulli Sophie,
 the Giraffe Teether

If I were to do this whole squeaky giraffe business on my own, but instead, make a squeaky cat, would it have the same effect?  Wait…not everyone likes cats.  What about if I made a squeaky elephant?

It seems like kids used to (“back in the day”) walk around with crusty blankets, but now, they walk around with ‘Raffy (aka, Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether).

What Mr.Sophie-the-Giraffe-Millionaire Man Must Be Thinking:

Doesn’t it kind of feel like some guy – the guy who invented this squeaky giraffe baby toy that resembles my dog’s chew toy (i.e., “
Mr.Sophie-the-Giraffe-Millionaire”) – is just sitting there, on his high-horse, thinking:

——- “How the f*** did I pull this one off?  Did I have magic fairy dust sprinkled on me at some point?  Do people not get that this is just a squeaky giraffe?  They have baby dolls that literally wet themselves, you know?  I think they even make dolls that have hair that grows…there’s dolls that can do all sorts of tricks.  But all these moms and their babies choose my squeaky giraffe?”  ——–

My Deep Thoughts on Mr. Sophie-the-Giraffe-Millionaire Man:

  • Is the rich giraffe guy super smart, or is he just really lucky?
  • Does his license plate say, “Giraffe”?  If not, it really should.
  • Does he flaunt his success? Or not share it with anyone and just tell everyone that he invented glue?

Nevertheless, my toddler loves the Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether.  But why?  I still don’t understand.

Baby Shower Gift Basket Ideas

If you’re stumped on a baby shower gift, here is a life of items that I got for my best friend for her baby shower.  I put them all in a cute $5 basket from Walmart’s craft section.

Here’s what’s in the baby shower gift basket:

1.  Huggies Little Snugglers Diapers for Newborns (umbilical cord cut-out) – Huggies Little Snugglers Diapers for Newborn

  • The Huggies Little Snugglers Diapers for Newborn are awesome newborn diapers because these diapers have an umbilical cord cut-out to prevent your baby’s umbilical cord stump from getting wet with pee (which helps the cord dry-up and fall-off more quickly).

2.  Soothe n Glow Seahorse – Fisher-Price Soothe and Glow Seahorse

  • I also refer to the  Fisher-Price Soothe and Glow Seahorse as “The Magic Seahorse”

3.  Oball – Oball

  • Young babies love this thing because it’s the first thing that they can hold onto with his tiny little fingers!

4.  The Going To Bed Book, by Sandra Boynton – “The Going-To-Bed Book.”

  • This book is a fast read, and is great for quickened bedtime story routines when time is short.  I love this book at have it memorized.  For more great books for baby, see Top 10 Must-Have Baby Books.

5.  Disposable Diaper Bags, by Munchkin – Disposable Diaper Bag Dispenser

6.  Sleep N Play Outfits with Zippers – Zippered Sleep N Play or Carters Easy Entry Sleep N Play

  • Sleep’n’Plays – with ZIPPERS (Zippered Sleep N Play) are where it’s at for easy clothing changes.  (I’m sorry, but buttoned outfits are just a pain in the…).  I like zippers…much faster and easier to change your baby in the middle of the night.

7.  SwaddleMe Blankets – SwaddleMe Blankets

8.  Halo Sleep Sack – HALO SleepSack

9.  Vaseline, for Baby – Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly, Baby

  • For baby’s dry skin during the winter.

10.  Cute Teddy Bear with Cute Teddy Hat

  • I found this teddy bear in the toy section at Walmart for $5.

11.  Side-Snap Onesies –   Kimono Bodysuit Side-Snap Onesie

12.  The LeachCo Podster – Leachco Newborn Podster

  • I already got her a Leachco Podster, otherwise that would be shown in this picture for sure (this is my #1 favorite baby item).

14.  Playtex Sippy Cups – Playtex Sippy Cups

My Battle With Sippy Cups

Are you familiar with the scene from the movie, “Office Space,” where Peter, Michael, and Samir decide that they’ve had enough of the P.O.S. copy machine from their work office – the copy machine that delivered frequent “paper jam” errors on a daily basis?  (Yes, this question does somehow relate to the topic of “sippy cups” for children).  Well, in the movie, “Office Space,” Peter, Samir and Michael take their hated copy machine from their employer’s office to a desert meadow, and then they use a baseball bat to completely demolish this copy machine that they had grown such a strong hatred for after years and years of time-consuming paper-jams that always happened at the most inopportune times..

What does the copy machine from the movie, “Office Space,” have to do with sippy cups, you may be wondering?  This vengeful scene that Peter, Samir and Michael spend ‘getting even’ with the copy machine is a fantastic representation of the way that I feel and want to behave towards sippy cups (i.e., replace the “copy machine” with “sippy cups”).  I may, or may not, find myself daydreaming about bringing all of my sippy cups and their stupid, unmatched lids, to a meadow with a baseball bat…

What Is The Big Deal About Sippy Cups?

Five-years-ago, I was celebrating “Thirsty Thursdays” with my girlfriends every week (aka, drinking alcohol on Thursday nights), and if you would have told me that five years from that point in time, that I’d be spending my Thursday and Friday nights cozied up on my couch and writing about my favorite sippy cups, then would have either:

  • (a) snorted with laughter because that is so lame and there was no way I would have believed that was true; or, I would have:
  • (b) cried, because I would have believed what you were saying, and that is so lame.

Nevertheless, here I am writing about sippy cups on my Thursday, Friday and even Saturday night, and it turns out that I’m totally cool with being so lame, because I (to my surprise) feel very passionately about this topic of sippy cups.  You may be wondering why.  Here is my answer:  Not all sippy cups are made equal.  No sir. No mam. To date, I believe I have tried at least 95% of the sippy cups on the market.  This means that I have at least one of each type of sippy cup in our kitchen cabinet, which also means that I spend what feels like half of my morning, afternoons, and nights trying to match up different sippy cups with different lids and with the corresponding bottom cup pieces – don’t even get my started on the different valve pieces.

Don’t let this be you.  Save yourself!  Don’t waste your money on bad sippy cups.  Refer to our list (Top 9 Sippy Cups for Baby and Toddler – Best of 2013) for advice on what the best sippy cups out there currently are, and save yourself the time and money.  Our team at Mommy Mia Monologues has teamed up with other my fellow moms; we’ve read a lot of product reviews to compare other opinions; and then we’ve used this information to devise a list of the best sippy cups on the market.

Side-Snap Onesies and Your Newborn Baby

Your Newborn’s Wobbly Head:

Side-snap onesies take the pain out of dressing your newborn because you don’t have to worry about pulling a shirt over your newborn’s wobbly little head.  Remember: they must be SIDE-SNAP onesies.  Just lay out the side snap onesies on your diaper changing table pad ahead of time and you can avoid the painfully scary process of pulling a shirt over your babies unstable little head.  This is the best advice I have to offer for newborn dressing solutions, and side snap onesies are an essential part of the list of Top 25 Must-Have Newborn Baby Items.

Babysoy Kimono Side Snap Onesie
Another Helpful Tip:

I only had three side snap onesies for my newborn and I’d enter a state of panic each time I realized that all three onesies were dirty and needed to do laundry.  I would recommend keeping at least six on-hand.

Where To Buy:

You can buy side-snap onesies at Target (in their baby section – they are made by Gerber).  You can also buy them from Gerber’s website.  I haven’t seen these at Walmart.  The average price is about $9.00 for a three-pack.

You can also purchase different varieties of side snap onesies through, but these tend to be more expensive than Target.

Top 5 Baby Bibs That Actually Work

Top 5 Baby Bibs Image

Here is a list of the Top 5 best baby bibs that we have found – all the way from newborn to toddler.  Why are bibs so important that they necessitate a “Top 5” list? Because stained baby clothes means more laundry and dressing and re-dressing your kid is a pain in the butt.    We also believe that sippy cups are equally as important (see Top 9 Sippy Cups for Babies and Toddlers for more information), and you can also read about my battle with sippy cups on the post My Battle With Sippy Cups.  For now, here are the five best baby bibs out there:

Top 5 Baby Bibs

1.  DaBib

Link:  DaBib – DaGiggles Waterproof
Ages:  0+ Months

Useful for DaBib – DaGiggles Waterproof is FANTASTIC for babies who seem to have a ‘hole in their lip’ – meaning that milk dribbles down their mouth because they can’t drink quite fast enough.   Most bibs don’t catch the milk that dribbles down baby’s cheek and under baby’s neck.  It’s a pain in the butt to constantly be washing underneath baby’s wobbly neck, and the consequence of not washing baby’s neck can end in a yeast infection.  This bib ROCKS.  It’s a tad pricey, but it’s worth every penny.  DaBib Waterproof Bib is also water-proof and it’s reversible – one side terry cloth and the other side is waterproof material (shown in the picture above).

NOTE:  Another brand with the same idea the DaBib Waterproof Bib (i.e., absorbing extra milk that flows out from your baby’s mouth) is the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Milk Feeding Bib, which also aims to catch the milk dripping down baby’s cheek.  I’ve used both bibs.  They are both fantastic.  In my opinion, the DaBib brand has a better absorbancy though, so if your baby has a “hole in its lip” (meaning that your baby dribbles A LOT when it drinks a bottle even with slow-flow nipples), then I would go with the DaBib brand and spend the extra money.  If your baby has a normal-to-medium dribbling problem, then I’d save some money and go with the  Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Milk Feeding Bib.

2.  Bumkins Long-Sleeved Bibs
Link:  Bumkins Long-Sleeved Bib

Bumkins Long-Sleeved Bib

Ages: 6+Months
Useful for:  Bumkins Long-Sleeved Bibs are great for the messy meals, especially the meals in which your very uncoordinated toddler will be feeding himself with a fork or a spoon.  I use this a lot for lunches to keep my little one’s clothes clean.

3.  Bumkins SuperBib
Link:  Bumkins Waterproof SuperBib

Bumkins Waterproof SuperBib
Ages:  6+ Months
Useful for:  The Bumkins Waterproof SuperBib bibs are experts at catching cheerios, and these are also very easy to clean (doesn’t require a washing machine after each use like other bibs).

4.   Waterproof Terry Bibs With Snaps
Link:  Waterproof Baby Bibs with Snaps
Waterproof Terry Baby Bibs

Ages:  0+ Months (or for babies who do not dribble)

Useful for:  The Waterproof Baby Bibs with Snaps are affordable, and effective once baby stops dribbling during feeding time).  For dribblers, using DaBib – DaGiggles Waterproof  is your best bet. But these bibs from for bottle-feeding, and for spoon-fed babies.  You can find comparable bibs, made by Parents’ Choice, at Wal-Mart (a 5-pack is $4.99).

5.  Ikea Bibs with Sleeves
Link:  Ikea Baby Bib Set with Sleeves
Ikea Baby Bib Set with Sleeves

Ages: 6+Months

Useful for:  The Ikea Baby Bib Set with Sleeves is a great bib for messy eaters and it’s a fraction of the price of the Bumkins Sleeved Bibs (the perk of the Bumkins is their sturdiness).  A 2-pack costs around $8.00.  These bibs are great for art projects later on in the child’s life.  Check out our post about the Top Items for Pre-Schoolers for more on the best products for toddlers and preschoolers.

Top Humidifiers for Baby (Easy-to-Use)

Top Cool Mist Humidifiers for Baby, Toddlers, and Preschools
In our post, Top 20 Items to Have On Hand This Flu Season, we talk about all of the items that you should have on-hand in case baby gets sick.  This post focuses exclusively on baby-safe humidifiers,  After great research and several failed attempts to find an effective, easy-to-use, safe, non-noisy, easy-to-fill, cool-mist humidifier for my newborn and toddler, I have, at last, narrowed it down to two different humidifiers (from different brands) that meet all of the above criteria: the Remedies Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier With Colored LED Lights and the Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier.  these are my conclusions as to the best humidifiers to use for your baby, toddler, or preschooler.  Please share with us your favorite humidifier for baby by commenting below!

1.   Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier – Hippo

Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier – Hippo

Link:  Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier

2.   Remedies Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier with Colored LED Lights

Remedies Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier with Colored LED Lights
Link:   Remedies Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier With Colored LED Lights

Both humidifiers are:
  • Effective at easing my child’s cold symptoms
  • Easy-to-use
  • Filter-free
  • Easy to clean! (compared to other humidifiers)
  • Easy to refill tanks (both the tanks fit in my small bathroom sink)
  • Quiet operation (unlike the Vick’s brand humidifiers that I have used)
  • Non-ugly
  • Small, yet still offers a 12-hour operation when used on a medium setting
  • Cool-Mist
  • Reasonably-priced
The  Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier is available in the DROP SHAPE (see the bottom of post for an example of the drop-shape) at Target and Wal-Mart (in-store), whereas I have only been able to find the Remedies Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier With Colored LED Lights  online or ship-to-store.  So if you’re baby is sick right now, I would most definitely go head to Wal-Mart or Target instead of waiting for the Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier to be shipped to you.
IMPORTANT:  You will not find the  Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier in the typical humidifier section at Target or Wal-Mart (it is NOT located in the section with the adult humidifiers); you must go to the baby section and you can usually find it near the baby-proofing items.

Other Findings:

I did find a good number of moms who recommended the Vicks V4500 FilterFree Humidifier (shown below), because this model features Vicks Vapor Therapy with an integrated scent pad heater.  I bought this model when I was in a pinch and needed a humidifier for my sick child fast, and found this is my local Wal-Mart.
Vicks V4500 FilterFree Humidifier
Vicks V4500 FilterFree Humidifier
I personally found the Vicks V4500 Humidifier to be noisy, difficult to clean, and its tank was difficult to refill in my bathroom sink (I had to use my bath tub). All of that outweighed the Vick’s Vapor therapy feature for me.

All humidifiers out there are annoying to deal with on some level because you have to clean them regularly and refill them daily.  The  Remedies Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier With Colored LED Lights and the Crane Cool Mist Humidifiers  have been, in my experience, the two humidifiers that will be the least pain in your bum;  this is based on my own trial and error, my research on discussion forums and online reviews, and also my research on; my research indicates that most other moms out there agree with me.

My top favorite humidifiers also come in other fun colors:
